Hi, I’m June
I started my recipe blog in 2010. I recently reached a stunning 1.000 recipes! It has been a true foodie adventure with the occasional bump in the road but my passion for food has never wavered.
Six years later and I’m still over the moon about my passion. It has given me the possibility to fully develop my love for cooking and in the meantime learn more about website building, social media and connecting with other bloggers and passionate foodies. I know how to start a food blog now!
I love it! You will love it too!
How to start a food blog
(and make money with it!)
I often get questions like where to start or whether I can give some good advice to aspiring food bloggers on how to start a food blog. And how I make money with it.
‘Do I need to study computers and internet first before starting a blog? What computer do I need? Is my camera or phone OK to start my food photography or do I need to invest in something bigger?’
A bunch of those type of questions find their way into my email inbox every week. I answer every single one personally! Let me pour over the most frequent questions I get below.
How to start a food blog: the basics
1. It starts with you!
Three things that you really need: the love for food and cooking, curiosity and the willingness to learn, and perseverance. Take away one of those and your blog won’t make it through its first year. Whatever food or cuisine you want to blog about, once it is online and you have written a bunch of posts you have to spend time sharing your work, mainly on social media. Blogging is about sharing your interests, your view on things, your opinion.
Blogging because it is fashionable and cool nowadays to be a blogger – that’s not enough. If you heart is not in it, don’t waste your time and money. Your blog will die out fast.
If you are absolutely passionate about anything (food related), if your heart is completely into this project, go for it.
In this course, I will tell you what a food blogger really needs
1. A computer
Well if you start blogging, having a laptop or computer isn’t a bad idea, right? I have blogged before using my smartphone (especially when I’m making little weekend trips and decide to leave my laptop at home) or my tablet. Honestly, writing a blog post containing 1500 words on a smartphone or tablet it not easy and most of all not pleasant at all. Uploading pictures and adding them to your new blog post is quite time consuming when you only have a small screen to work with.
In my e-course I show you which computer you really need (or if the one you own is already good enough) to start your food blogging adventure from.
2. Camera vs. smartphone
Big surprise. Is food photography possible using your smartphone only? My answer is a huge yes! And I’ll tell you why and how in my e-course. No need to invest thousands of dollars in the last state of the art camera and expensive lenses: you can start food blogging by using the phone you have in your pocket. No joke. That’s how I make my food pictures: with my smartphone. And I get loads of positive comments about the picture quality! So yes, I’m absolutely convinced that a smartphone is more than enough!
How to start a food blog: it all starts with these 3 steps!
1. Your blog name
So you have decided to start a food blog, great!
First off: choose a good blog name. And I mean a good one. There are millions of food blogs and websites on the internet so here’s the challenge for you to come up with something catchy and creative! This is a fun thing to do, you will love it!
Not sure what name you should go for? Brainstorm, ask your friends and family. I will show you how. Take your time ‘cause your blog name has to reflect you and preferably what your blog is all about. My blog used to be frugalfoodierecipes.com for a long time but once it started booming I changed it to my own name junedarville.com… Changing your blog name later on is easy! I will show you how to do that too.
2. Set up your blog
Now that you have chosen your blog name, here is the next step: set up your blog. It’s easy when you follow the tips of How To Start A Food Blog!
Blogging platform, sounds scary. It’s not! That’s where you start your website, build and publish your posts.
Some of them are all-in-one solutions like Blogger, SBI or Wix. You surely have heard of at least one of those. Some of them are even free. You only need to log onto a platform, enter your blog name, choose a layout and you can start designing your website. As a matter of fact you could be publishing your very first blog post in less than 1 hour! Making a website this way goes that fast and I did that too. I know now that it’s not a good way to how to start a food blog. I will tell you in my e-course why this is not a sustainable solution, and why I don’t recommend this method.
However I highly recommend to use WordPress. As my website was growing and growing I decided to play safe. I needed a more reliable way to protect my website from problems such as getting hacked, be offline for no reason, and fearing leaky backups. After all I had worked so hard to build up this website, it would be a shame to loose everything in a blink of an eye. And it happens.
Since you are a beginning blogger I will teach you how to go for a web host who takes care of your website storage, security against hackers, viruses and spam, and takes care of your backups. Should your website get into trouble one day, at least you will not have lost your time and hard work.
Installing your website asks a bit more of your time and is not free but it’s worth it. Take that from me. A paid domain name and web hosting gives you much more freedom. How much are we talking here? Less than 4 dollars each month – because you get a 60% discount if you follow my How To Start A Food Blog course!
My course will guide you step by step and show you how to get your blog installed, secured and ready to go.
3. Blog design
You’re almost there!
Once you have chosen your blog name, platform and hosting the only thing for you to do now is to choose a beautiful blog layout design aka theme or template.
Now the fun really begins. It’s like decorating your home and choosing the right paint, curtains and furniture that you love and find a way to put them together until you are satisfied and proud.
That’s why you don’t want an all-in-one solution. You need to have access to a variety of elements and plugins that will help you to customize your blog to give it the right feeling and glamour just the way you wanted it.
Guiding you through the choice of layouts and how to apply and adapt them is yet another element of my course.
You are ready to blog! You just started the blog you have always dreamed of. It’s all yours. Let the writing begin. Take a deep breathe and enjoy.
Stage fright? Writer’s block? No panic. It also happens to me from time to time. Here’s how I solve it: I go out for a walk, a swim or a run, take a warm bath, play my favorite music, make a cup of coffee, tea or hot cocoa, browse the internet and do some research about the topic I want to write about. Is all this to no avail? Stop focussing and try again tomorrow. Or start writing about a totally different idea. Don’t get obsessive about it. That’s how to start a food blog: keep it fun. You are the boss, not your blog.
How to use photography to start a food blog
I will teach you the basics of using your smartphone to make stunning food pics like mine.
Another fun thing about shooting pictures with your smartphone: you can immediately edit them using a photo editing app. There are loads of them. But I will share with you the best tricks with my favorite app: Snapseed. It is soooooooo user friendly and very easy to learn!
Growing your blog and making money
What’s the total costs to launch your blog until now? As we have seen, you are already off to a good start if you own a simple camera or a smartphone. That’s where a significant part of you budget goes to. You also need a computer of course. If you have one already, with a good WordPress theme for recipes, your total starting budget will be something between $100 and $200. And less than $4 a month to pay your web hosting. That’s it.
With such a low investment, you can make good money. I will learn you how.
Your blog will not share itself: you have to get out there and become active on social media as much as you can. Show people who you are and what you do. That’s how you will attract more visitors to your website and increase the chance of making money. At this moment, the most popular social media for food bloggers are Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Google+: I am happy to have about 40,000 followers all in all. I will learn you how to do the same.
There are a lot of options to make money with a website: create and sell your own products, sell someone else’s products and get a commission, getting paid to write a review about something or write a post as a guest blogger for someone else’s website. Many bloggers put a lot of annoying and ugly advertising on their website. If a visitor clicks on the advertising, the bloggers gets paid a couple of cents. I personally don’t do that. If I write about products for certain brands then that’s because I have tried it out and I’m really enthusiastic about it. I want my visitors and followers to learn from my experience.
I will initiate you into the best practices to make your blog profitable, what the role of social media is, how to use email marketing with an autoresponder and how to launch your own products!

Frequently Asked Questions
For who is this course made?
I wrote this course for absolute food blog beginners who are not sure where to start and could use a little push in the back to finally realize their blogging dream. This course is not for professionals and food bloggers who already have a successful website.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound?! After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this online course for as long as you like, across any and all devices you own.
What will it cost to launch my blog?
If you have already a computer and a smartphone, it will cost you between $100 and $200 to begin, plus less than $4 a month for your hosting (with the discount that you will receive as my student).
Do I have to purchase additional apps and equipment?
The most powerful apps and plugins that you need for blogging are free. However there are a couple of apps or plugins that are useful for advanced blogging but they are very affordably priced between $1 and $5. Regarding the equipment, there are no must-haves (I personally have never had to use them). Since you are starting a food blog, expenses for groceries, cutlery, earthenware and ingredients might go up a bit. I suggest you start with recipes you are familiar and comfortable with. Don’t feel like you have to add caviar to that poached egg or top a beautifully seared steak with foie gras to please your followers. Less is more, especially in the beginning. Focus on presentation and plating up first.
When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course. You decide when you start and when you finish. You will not have to commit to (expensive) monthly or yearly subscriptions.
