Who invented tomato ketchup?
The history of ketchup is quite fascinating!
The precursor to modern ketchup was a fermented fish sauce from southern China, which was made as early as 300 B.C. and was easy to store on long ocean voyages.
It wasn’t until 1812 that the first recipe for homemade tomato ketchup was invented by James Mease, a Philadelphia scientist. Before that, tomato plants were brought to England from South America in the 1500s, but their fruits weren’t eaten for centuries because some people considered them poisonous.
The acid of the tomato leeched the lead into the food when wealthy Englishmen ate from lead pewter plates, causing lead poisoning.
Today ketchup is enjoyed around the world and is found in 97% of U.S. homes.
What brand sells the most tomato ketchup in the world?
It is interesting to note that ketchup has a storied past that dates back to imperial China and was once completely tomato-free.
